Waves win Little League Championship

For the Midway Green 7-8 year old baseball team, Saturday was a beautiful day in more ways than one. The sun was finally shining after a season full of rainouts, and the view on the scoreboard was even better. Midway Green 13, Kingston Scrappers 5. The big win brought an end to a great season for the little Green boys from Midway.

For several years, Midway Youth League has struggled to be competitive with Kingston's 5-6 and 7-8 year old teams. With some well coached and experienced players, this year's Green team rolled through the Kingston league, losing only two games during the regular season. The boys continued to play some great ball throughout the post season tournament to bring the Kingston hardware South of the River.

The Midway White team also had a great season, finishing third in the league with only three losses during the regular season.

In the Championship game, the Green team held the Kingston boys scoreless in the top of the first. The defensive effort was highlighted by a nice play by Midway shortstop Bailey Parks, who ran backwards for an over the shoulder catch to get the second out of the inning. Midway scored two runs in the bottom of the first, when Blake Parks singled, and Zane Moser homered.

Kingston got going in the second and took a 3-2 lead, but Midway was not going to let this one slip away. The Green came back with some great hits in the bottom of the inning to break open the game with five more runs and take a 7-3 lead.

In the third, Kingston scored one run and threatened to score more before Midway first baseman C.J. Huff made a nice play at first base to get the Green team out of trouble with the third out. Midway 7, Kingston 4. More Midway hits added two more runs in the bottom of the third, and the Green team ran the score to 9-4.

In the fourth inning, Kingston added another run, but the Green refused to let up. Shortstop Bailey Parks and C.J. Huff both added home runs, and second baseman Jay Taylor busted his third hit of the day for a stand up triple. When the damage was done, the Waves held a commanding 13-5 lead, and that's the way the game would end. The Championship was in the Green Waves' hands.

The Midway boys hit the ball all over the field and excited the Green fans with impressive base running. Jay Taylor led the way, batting 3-3 on the day with three runs scored. All of Jay's hits were long shots to the fence. Pitcher Zane Moser was also 3-3 with three runs. Blake Parks went 2-3 with two runs. Right fielder Brendan Burnum hit 2-3 with 2 runs. Jean Ross Lyle was 2-2 with one run. Bailey Parks went 2-3 with one run, while Andrew Burton went 2-3 on the day at the plate. Paul Coley was 1-2. Josiah Delgado played a solid game for the Green at his third base position.

Congratulations all around to a bunch of great kids who are going to make some noise in the years to come in all sports for the Midway Green Waves. Also congrats to the coaches of these boys, Randy Parks, Chad Huff, Josh Gibbs, and Jason Delgado. Thanks for the time and effort. This may have been the biggest win in the 7-8 year old group in Midway history. Ya'll made the Green Nation proud.

The weather didn't stop the action; the game was simply moved to the gym and aluminum bats were replaced with a more "indoor-friendly" one.
