In just the 2nd week of play, the Midway Youth League basketball season has produced some outstanding games. This year the teams are much more equally matched and this had lead to some exciting games, most of which have been decided by less than 5 points with several already going into overtime.
Last week saw two great games from the 8-10 age group with the Midway Hunter Green team winning by four, 24-20, over the Midway Black team. The second game featured a Woody family reunion with the Midway Blue team coached by Randall Woody squared off against the Midway Red team coached by Kasey and Jeremy Woody. The brother/sister coached combo of Kasey and Jeremy defeated their uncle Randall in 23-21 shot out that came down to the final seconds.
Hunter Green Team vs Black Team “You can’t stop him; you can only hope to contain him!” Who are we talking about? None other than the Hammer….Hammerin’ Hayden Hester. Hayden had a break out game and became Mr. Offense in the 2nd half as he found himself taking the ball all the way on several fast breaks.

Cameron was moved to point guard and Zach to forward. This has provided some excellent ball movement between Cameron, Zach, and the big men on the block.
Defensively, Logan had a career best game. The skinny blonde kid played like a man among boys as he consistently picked off any pass that came his way.
The game was tight through all 4 quarters with the Black team’s Kyle Mathews hitting nearly everything he shot. But in the end, it would be the fast break points by Hammerin’ Hayden that pushed his team to a 24-20 victory.
Red Team vs Blue Team It would be yet another close game in the 8-10 age group. The Red and Blue Team battled all four quarters with the Red Team holding on to a 23-21 win.
_Blue_vs_Red/DSC_0070.jpg) Like drama? Well this game featured it. Blue Team down by 2, Mason Woody picked off an inbounds pass (thanks Kasey) and took it to the goal; however, he missed the lay up but was then fouled on the put back attempt at the buzzer. This put Mason on the line with no time left on the clock. Woody would need to hit both foul shots in order to force overtime. His first attempt would miss off the front of the rim and the game would end with Lyle and the Red Team holding on with the 2 point win.
The Red Team, led by Shandon Lyle, held to a marginal lead the majority of the game with Lyle and Woody swapping baskets.
You can expect the same competitive and exciting games each Saturday at Midway Elementary gymnasium.
