Important Update

Thank you for visiting littleleague.sorsn.com. Moving forward, we will not separate the youth league news from the high school and jr high news. Everything will be housed on the main site, sorsn.com.

For example, a football write-up regardless if it's youth league, jr high, or high school will be found under the SORSN Football section on sorsn.com.

The youth league will not have a roster or schedule section, it's simply too difficult to keep up with those changes; however, we hope to continue to use the google community calendar for youth league game schedules. You can find a link to the calendar under the 'News' section on sorsn.com.

Thank you.

Midway Youth Win Championship

This past Sunday, the 2009 "Battle in Rocky Top" 10-year-old Division Football Champions were crowned. And the Champions are... the Midway Green Waves!!!! Over the weekend, the Waves faced off against four extremely talented football teams and came away with the big gold ball. The WHOLE enchilada... the Championship, baby. We are the Champions, WE are Champions. It was exciting and it was at times heart-stopping, but the little Green Team did it. They did it with solid defense and a high octane offense. They did it with gang tackling and precision blocking. It was a textbook team effort. Not one outstanding player, but an outstanding team. The Knoxville-based "Battle in Rocky Top" football tournament drew teams from 17 states. 189 teams playing in 15 different age and division groups. Midway would face off against 15 different teams in basically a single elimination tournament.

The Midway team consisted of the core players from last year's Sequoia Youth League's regular season Champions. Hunter McCellan, Caleb Burton, Landon Davidson, Dakota Narramore, Tyler Thompson, Jake Woody, Drake Romines, and Skyan Lyle. Coaches Brian Thompson and Josh Narramore filled out their 10-year-old team with the additions of Kane Roberts, Jackson Long, Caleb Rutherford, Cole Fritts, Brody Houston, and Jace Johnson The last player on the team was little man Bryce Rogers. Bryce started his football career with the Midway Football League and played with this bunch of boys until his dad, Trent, was transferred to Maryland a couple of years ago. Coaches Thompson and Narramore hoped their young team would gel quickly. After only one week of practice, the Green Team gave a sneak preview of what was to come when they smashed the mouths of the Bearden All-Stars, 19-0 at Sweetwater.

Another week of practice and the boys were ready to ply their skills at the "Battle in Rocky Top" Tournament. The Midway Green Wave team opened their first game on Saturday morning at 10:50. It was a beautiful day for football at Schubert Park in Fountain City. The Waves' first opponent was a local team from Carter in Knoxville. The Green Team's running backs, Cain Roberts and Jackson Long, found big holes in the Carter defense early in the first quarter, thanks to the massive and talented Midway line: Thompson, Johnson, Davidson, Burton, McClellan, and Narramore. Midway built a 12-0 lead by the end of the first. The second quarter saw the Green let up a little, as Carter would score two touchdowns and take a 14-12 lead into the half. During the break, Coaches Thompson and Narramore provided some positive encouragement. The Waves responded with 14 unanswered points in the second half and got the 26-14 win.

In the afternoon game, Midway would face Christian Brothers School, an impressive looking team from Louisiana. C.B.S fielded a large, well-coached team. Many of the Midway coaches felt this may be the team to beat in this tournament. Everybody knows a team who travels all the way from Louisiana is not coming to lose. But the C.B.S. team must have not planned on seeing a Midway line that averaged 165 lbs and two 10-year-old running backs who looked like 14-year-olds. Nor were they expecting players like Lyle, Romines, Narramore and Woody, who look like boys, yet hit like men. With Woody directing the show at quarterback, the running duo of Roberts and Long ran wild and scored on EVERY Midway possession. The defense added a stellar performance, allowing only six points to the stunned visitors from Louisiana. Hunter McClellan dominated the entire tournament from his defensive tackle position. Skyan Lyle was all over the field with massive hits in all the games. Davidson and Johnson played the end positions to perfection, containing the running backs and turning back into the massive Midway front line. But the important thing was the Green were 2-0, and the team was ready to continue to Sunday.

Four games in two days is almost unheard of in the football world, but the Green Team suffered zero game-ending injuries. That's not to say that the team didn't have some bad luck. Saturday night saw the virus bug strike, as hard-hitting linebacker and defensive signal caller Dakota Narramore came down with a bad case of the pukes. Narramore returned on Sunday and played his heart out for the team, even though it was evident he was a very sick boy.

On Sunday morning, the Green Waves faced off against a very scrappy Hamilton "Lil' Blue" team. The Hamilton team was from Ohio and would prove to be the biggest competition for the SOR team. The "Lil' Blue" team was not so little and matched the size of the Midway team, man for man. The Green Waves, behind the big line and the running of Roberts and Long, scored first but failed on the conversion. 6-0, Midway. Hamilton answered with a halfback pass on fourth and long for a "Lil' Blue" touchdown. Two point conversion failed. Midway would reclaim the lead in the third on a Roberts touchdown. Long then followed a big push by the Midway line to get the oh so important two point conversion. With less than two minutes to play in the game, the "Lil' Blue" team once again went to the halfback pass and again converted the play into a touchdown. Hamilton needed the two point conversion to tie the game. The Midway fans were in a frenzy, which fired up the Green Wave defense. The SOR chant was ringing loud and clear. The Blue quarterback took the snap and handed off to the left side, but the Minister of Defense, Hunter McClellan, broke through the line and managed to get a hold of the running back's undershirt. Hunter Mac was on the ground, shirt still in hand, when big Caleb Burton arrived with a vengeance to slam the running back to the ground and preserve the Midway victory, 14-12. Burton, Thompson, and Hunter Mac proved to be the difference on the front line for the Midway defense. Too strong and too aggressive for the opposing team.

In the Championship Game, the Green Waves would be paired with the Lakota Tomahawks from Cincinnati, Ohio. This game would start at 5:00 pm on Sunday. A short, heavy rain had fallen around 2:00 pm, and the field had turned into a muddy mess. Talk on the fence line was that the Tomahawks team was very good. One by-stander stated that Midway would not be able to hang with the Ohio team. Some pregame antics from the Tomahawk coaches only added fire to the Green Wave players. On the opening kick-off, Midway's Cain Roberts received the ball around the 30 yard line. Roberts started left, then reversed his field and raced 70 yards for the Midway score. The Lakota team was no match for the fired up Green Wave team. Lyle, Romines, and Woody were all over the field on defense. The Midway coaches worked the clock on offense and the Green defense took care of the rest. 12-0 at the half and a final score of 18-0. The Midway Green Waves were the "Battle in Rocky Top" Champions. I say it's great.. to be..from SOR. I say It's great..to be........

The Championship was a great finish to an an exciting weekend of football. We personally would like to thank everybody involved for all the hard work and for all the effort to further advance the reputation of Midway football.

Midway 9 and 7 year olds also played in the tournament. I only got to see one of the 9 years old game and it was a dandy. The green pulled out a great 6-0 victory against an unbeaten team from Georgia.

Cheerleading Competition

Last Saturday was the Midway Quartback Club's first time hosting the Sequoya Conference Sub-District Cheerleading Competition. When Midway left the Tri-County Football League and joined the Sequoya Football Conference four years ago, there were many questions as to whether this was the best move for Midway to make. As far as Midway Cheerleading goes, it was the best possible move ever!

For as long as I can remember, cheerleading has taken a back seat in youth football. The girls were never treated as equals. The Sequoya Football Conference does not operate that way. The girls not only cheer at all the games, but the league, rotating through the host communities, holds two cheerleading competitions per season. Last Saturday was Midway's turn to host the first competition of the year. This is not a simple "ra-ra" cheerleading competition. This was miniature "Bring It On" dancing.

The Midway girls held their own, and even though they didn't bring home the gold, they did impress this writer with their energy and spirit!! It didn't take a expert to see that Midway coaches Amy Moses, Rena Stevens, and Lisa Beason have spent many hours preparing our girls for this competition.

The sheer size of this event was overwhelming. It was much too big for Midway's facilities. Midway event coordinators Alisha Thompson and Kelley Narramore made a wise decision to lease the Roane State facilities. Nineteen cheerleading teams squared off on the Roane State Gymnasium floor. Cheer and dancing routines were off the charts for these young girls and this old football fan found himself amazed by the talent of these young ladies. Kelley and Alisha were very thoughtful about community success. Thinking about the big picture of Midway sports, they invited all sports to set up a booth as a fund raiser for themselves. Amy Woody's basketball girls were well represented with a trinket booth, Coach Moser's football team videoed the event and sold copies to the cheerleading parents, Coach Hutchinson's softball girls where loaded down with pies, cakes, and sausage biscuits. The MMS Basketball girls sold snacks and treats. High School cheerleading coach Karen Parkison had her girls on the gym floor looking like cheerleading super guards, handling any problems and taking care of any tasks that needed attention. It was a very impressive show of support for the youth league by an impressive bunch of High School girls. Great Job High School Cheerleaders!! Also the Midway Quarterback Club board of directors were well represented, handling any problems that arose in the five hour event. Anybody attending this event could easily tell this was not a fly by night operation. Many hours of planning and hard work went into the organizing and setup of this event. Many parents and Midway family members spent several hours to ensure that this event was a success. The President of the Sequoya Football Conference said it best, "This was the most organized cheerleading competition we've seen". Thanks to Alisha Thompson, Kelley Narramore, and the entire Midway Quarterback Club for such a professional and quality event.

Midway Cutters Vs. Madisonville Tornadoes

The Tornadoes from Madisonville blew into SOR on a dismal day hoping to find a bright spot in their dismal season. They picked the wrong spot to touch down.

The Waves were determined to keep the previous week's momentum rolling and that's exactly what they did, in horrible weather and with a new QB, as Skyan Lyle would step in for an injured Jake Woody, who was dealing with a pulled hamstring, and do a fine job. As one might expect, field conditions would play a part, as both teams would find footing to be tricky at times but Midway would demonstrate great ball control and not commit a single fumble or turnover. Midway's first score would find Alex Thomason drilling his way into the end zone for 6 and Lyle would hit Drake Lamn on a sharp pass to tack on the two pointer.

The Mighty Green would continue it's dominance on defense behind Hunter "Mac" McClellan, Caleb Burton, Landon Davidson, Quentin Partin, Sammy Hester, Seth Coyler and Daniel Sims, never really giving Madisonville the room or time they needed. Midway continued to move the ball on offense with solid running from Thomason, Lyle and Drake Romines and occasional passing to Lamn, Dalton Jolly, Dakota Narramore and Griffin Dishner. The Tornado D could not find the answer and would get burned by a weaving Romines to add the final score and move the Green Team to 4-2 with an impressive 14-0 victory. Up next, the visiting Vonore Blue Devils.

Midway Cutters vs. Greenback Cherokees

Let's face it, when it comes to football rivalries, few match the intensity and passion of Midway and Greenback. They are the Hatfields and McCoys. Batman and The Joker. Republicans and Democrats. Simply put, they don't like each other. At all. Theirs is a storied and rich history of hatred and it starts early.

Saturday, the Midway faithful essentially transplanted the Emerald Forest to Blount County for the afternoon as it felt more like a home game than not, and they were not disappointed as The Wave rolled thru Cherokee country like a flash flood. From the beginning it was a route. Drake Romines would take the second handoff of the game 60 yards to the house to light up the scoreboard 6-0. After a failed two point attempt, the Mighty Green would kick the ball away. The Midway D would then take command, quickly smothering Greenback play after play. Seth Colyer and Caleb Burton(three sacks) would anchor the defensive line with great help from Sammy Hester, Dakota Narramore, Daniel Sims and Landon Davidson.

On Midway's second offensive series, they would move the ball with effective running from Alex Thomason and Romines, bolstered by good blocking from the offensive line, led by center Tyler Thomason, before Jake Woody would throw a perfect pass to a streaking Drake Lamn, who would outrun the field to add another six. Skyan Lyle would bounce outside and into the endzone to score two and make it 14-0 at the half.

In the Second half, it was more of the same, with Midway stuffing Greenback's struggling D and Moving the ball fairly easy on offense. Midway would continue to pound the ball down field until Thomason found room and sprinted to the end zone for Midway's final score of the game. The two point try would come up short, 20-0. Romines would tee up the ball at the 40 yard line to kick it away and proceed to sum up Greenback's frustration in the game. Romines booted a beautiful kick 30 yards down field. The kick would hit in front of the Cherokee's return man and bounce into the air. He would take the ball from the air only to be hit hard by Romines, covering his own kickoff and displaying the heart that Midway played with all game long. From that point, it would all be on the shoulders of the defense. Greenback would put together their best drive of the day in the 4th and push the ball all the way down to Midway's 1/2 yard line. However, the Boys from the South would show their stuff once again when, on 4th & goal from inches out, they would make a dramatic goal line stand to stamp out Greenback's scoring hopes and preserve a well deserved shutout.

Midway Cutters vs. Loudon Redskin Mustangs

The Mighty Green, following a fine win at home against the Polk County Cutters, traveled to Loudon County to face off against an undefeated Redskin squad. The game would prove to be a lopsided affair as Midway was greatly outsized and simply could not stop a surging Loudon offense.

Midway would get its offensive spark through the air as Dalton Jolly would get two big receptions, one from RB Drake Romines and the other, a huge touchdown catch, from QB Jake Woody, to get The Emerald Warriors on the board. The Waves would do a good job on the other side of the ball holding Loudon to only three scores before falling 22-6 and evening up their season record at 2-2.
